Wirral Waters supports thousands of local kids

Published: 4 April 2018

Here at Wirral Waters team, we are delighted to be supporting Wirral Youth Zone, known locally as The Hive! We've had the pleasure of pledging a three-year donation, worth £25,000 per year, which will go towards the running costs of the scheme, such as staff costs.

The Hive opened in April 2017 and is a £6m purpose-built facility on Bright Street for young people aged from 8 to 19 and up to 25 years of age for those with disabilities. It also offers young people from across the Wirral access to a wide range of facilities, from sports and arts to music, drama, and employability workshops, at a cost of £5 for an annual membership and 50p per visit.

The Hive strives to offer a safe environment where young people can enjoy themselves, while enabling them to raise their aspirations and confidence, in order to create a happier, and healthier generation. Through this, the organisation has forged strong links with the region’s business community.

As a patron member of The Hive, Richard Mawdsley, director of development at Wirral Water, said: “We are committed to The Hive.

“We want to link Wirral Waters, and the many opportunities that will exist as part of our regeneration scheme, with the local community and The Hive is part of that.”

He said as part of our extensive public consultation exercise over the potential of Wirral Waters for the region it was clear that there was a need for strong links between us and the public, particularly the younger generation who will benefit from the £4.5bn of investment earmarked for Wirral Waters over a 30-year period.

“The public were saying to us, ‘give us something for our kids’.

“Our support for The Hive is just part of our commitment to Birkenhead, and we are more than delighted at this opportunity to give something to the community.”

John Syvret CBE, chairman of The Hive’s board and a founder patron recently unveiled a plaque at the Youth Zone to mark Peel’s ongoing support.

Mr Syvret, another founder patron and chief executive of local Birkenhead shipbuilding, repair and conversion specialist, Cammell Laird, said “We are enormously grateful for the support of each of our founder patrons, whose donations enables us to help young people to raise their aspirations and realise their full potential for the future.

“The endorsement of successful, high-profile organisations like Peel strengthens our profile and encourages other businesses to lend their support.”
